The Oppressed Little Fetus: Speak for the Weak in this post said “I honestly think nature didn’t…
Yo momma’s not natural“Natural” things: murder, infanticide, incest, cannibalism..
Fact: the “natural” and “unnatural” categorization of behavior is a false dichotomy. We are not an isolated group of supreme beings living in a vacuum; humans are by necessity part of nature. An unusual part of nature, but part nonetheless. Common human behaviors (such as terminating pregnancies and preventing them to begin with) cannot be “unnatural” because it is obviously in our nature to do them.
Other fact: “nature” does not “intend” anything. Stop trying to personify natural selection and don’t even think about trying to legitimize subjective opinion by dressing it up in pseudo-intellectualism. Natural selection a process, not an entity. We (modern humans) are not around because “god” or “nature” intended it. We exist in our current form because we reproductively out-competed the many, many others. Ours was the winning model. It’s also important to note that there are “natural” (involuntary) forms of birth control: starvation results in temporary loss of fertility. Nursing also makes conception much less likely. Our bodies have mechanisms that help us to avoid the metabolically costly process of reproduction under conditions where it is unlikely to produce successful offspring - just like abortion and birth control. Control of reproductive timing makes us more reproductively fit, not less.
If there is to be a legitimate debate about reproductive fitness (the basis for natural selection) and birth control/abortion, access to reproductive planning can only be an asset. Individuals of any species must deal with a conflict of interests between reproduction and personal health - this should be obvious if we consider how birthing many babies is correlated with greatly shortened maternal lifespans. Additionally, our species is one requiring at least a full decade of parental investment, such that maternal survival is a necessary condition for ensuring survival of offspring. With reproductive planning, you can ensure that you give birth to healthy offspring under conditions that allow for their survival.Speak for the Weak in this post said “I honestly think nature didn’t really intend for us to use all these birth control methods. Giving birth is a natural process, and stopping it seems to be quite complicated don’t you think?”
It reminded me of this:
